Marching Bands are COOL!

December 6th, 2007

Who said otherwise?
Check out this little ditty that the Cal-Berkeley marching band put together at a halftime performance.

The only bad thing about this vid is that it was filmed upside down so you have to picture everything right side up. Still awesome!!

Just EAT it

November 8th, 2007

A few weeks ago Joey Chestnut made national headlines by eating 103 Krystal hamburgers(they are small) in only 8 minutes!! uhh…YUM?! chestnut

At 23, he is the worlds #1 ranked eater and is no stranger to the competitive eating spotlight. Earlier this year on July 4th, Chestnut consumed a whopping record of 66 Nathan’s hot dog in 12 minutes to defeat six-time champion Takeru Kobayashi.

The recent stories of the skilled gurgitators got me curious about the “sport” of competitive eating. So here is a little info I dug up for you, the loyal Jockbox reader:

The IFOCE, short for the International Federation of Competitive Eating, is a real organization. Their motto is to:

“…helps to ensure that the sport remains safe, while also seeking to achieve objectives consistent with the public interest — namely, creating an environment in which fans may enjoy the display of competitive eating skill.”

There are currently about 20 members who are officially “ranked.” Among the members are Chestnut, Kobayashi, and 105-pound heavyweight Sonya Thomas. These three musketeers hold NUMEROUS eating records between them such as:

  • Jalapeno peppers-118 in 10 minutes
  • Pulled Pork-9lbs, 6oz in 10 minutes
  • Bratwurst-58 in 10 minutes
  • Baked Beans-8.4 lbs in 2 minutes 47 seconds
  • Cheesecake-11lbs in 9 minutes
  • Hard boiled eggs-65 in 6 minutes 50 seconds
  • Oysters-46 DOZEN in 10 minutes

These are just a handful. The fact that there are records and ppl compete for these titles is just gross. I don’t even want to think about the damage that occurs the next morning. I mean who does this? Disgusti..
Daaarn!

I just finished my one pound Halloween bag of M&M’s I got on sale today. Now you will have to excuse me while I open my King size Snickers…

ROCK-tober

October 24th, 2007

21-1. Undefeated in the postseason. Now facing the big bad Boston Red Sox in the World Series. Should the Colorado Rockies be worried? Not in the least…

Sure, on the surface Boston looks like Goliath compared to Colorado. Big Papi, Manny, Kevin Youkilis, Mike Lowell, Josh Beckett are all big time producers. The biggest name on Colorado is Matt Holliday and maybe Jeff Francis. Yet, they still led the National League in hitting AND pitching this season.

I am not the only one who believes the Rockies have a shot. Check out ESPN columnist Jayson Starks article here. He thinks Colorado will win in 6.The Jockbox point is that the Colorado Rockies have been the underdogs all season long and yet they managed to still make to the Fall Classic in undefeated fashion. This team is reminiscent of a 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers team that shocked the Oakland Athletics. They are simply underdogs with no big name players when compared to their mighty opponents. And like those Athletics, the Red Sox will fall to the Rockies in this series 4 games to 1, sans Kirk “the gimp” Gibson.

**UPDATE: The Red Sox swept the Rockies to take the Series. Ok, so my prediction was slightly off.

UPDATE: X-Wing launch video!

Not for the faint of heart. Or Star Wars geeks. Like you may have read here earlier, the Jock Box skepticism was well deserved. Check out the video of the successful disastrous launch of the X-Wing. RIP!

Stanford
The wide world of sports wackiness hit full throttle this weekend. The most notable, 112 ranked Stanford upsetting top-ranked USC…at USC. Using a backup QB who was making his first start nonetheless. Stanford was 40 point underdogs in one of the biggest point spreads in history. Believe it Spoiled Children fans. Beeeelleeeb it

!Diamondbacks to play Rockies in NLCS

Two teams from the NL West. Two perennial bottom feeders. One step away from the World Series. I’m still scratching my head on this one.More later…
